Notley Puppy and Dog training School was founded in 2012 by Gary Notley, a dog-obsessed trainer with over 30 years of training experience. We provide force free reward-based training in Essex and Surrounding areas. Puppy to advanced classes are available in Great Notley, Chelmsford and Witham, and Scentwork classes in Braintree and Maldon.

From the age of 7, Gary would ask to walk his neighbours’ dogs, whilst his parents resisted pleas for a puppy. A year later they gave in. His first dog was a little black and tan crossbreed called Rex. Several dogs followed, but it was a rescued English Springer X called Toby who was to shape Gary’s outlook on training. In April 2002 during a session with a trainer who used aversive methods, Toby ran off and was killed after being hit by a car. Gary vowed never to use aversive training techniques ever again.

Gary’s road to becoming a top dog trainer wasn’t exactly a straight path. Starting out in the 90’s as an Assistant Instructor, then Instructor with a local training school. Life threw him a curveball in 2008 when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. Following three years of chemotherapy, on returning to work, a car accident left him with a broken neck. Unable to carry on with full-time work, he decided to turn his passion into a dream: running classes that are both effective and fun. From a humble beginning of just one weekly class, he’s now teaching 13 classes per week including six lively puppy sessions and offering private 1-1 training and behaviour modification, as well as specialised courses and workshops.

Gary’s expertise isn’t just local. He’s trained dogs in the USA, Scandinavia, Spain, Netherlands, Macau, the Philippines, and even studied street dogs in India, always adding new skills and knowledge to his toolkit. At home, Notley Dog Puppy and Dog Training School, is recommended by local vets and approved by the Royal Kennel Club to teach the Good Citizen Dog Scheme. He is also qualified to teach UK Sniffer Dogs Scent Detection classes, workshops and trials, and the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers Partnership grades.

Notley Puppy and Dog Training School provide force free dog training and behaviour services in Essex and surrounding areas. Puppy, beginners, improvers and advanced classes are available in Great Notley, Broomfield (near Chelmsford) and Silver End. Additional services include Loose Lead Walking and Recall workshops, 1 to 1 Puppy and dog training, puppy home visits, behaviour consultations, and litter temperament testing.

Gary’s approach to dogs from puppyhood to adult is very gentle and is based on positive reinforcement. This is the modern and more efficient way of training animals. The classes are friendly, funny, and most behaviours learned or practiced are applicable to real-life situations. It is a pleasure to work with Gary!!

Started taking our puppy to Gary’s classes when she was a few months old. The first week started with her hiding under the chair but as the weeks progressed came out of her shell more and more. This was due to Gary’s patience, focusing on reward-based training, and learning to take everything at my puppy's pace.
